On the second last day of training for the year, North Queensland coach Paul Green is giving his players a head start in adapting to NRL rule changes for 2020.
The Cowboys mentor has brought in NRL referees to oversee training on Thursday and Friday to ensure players understand a slew of new rules that were introduced by the ARLC earlier this month.
Changes include a 20/40 kick option, choosing the lateral position of a scrum on the 10 metre or 20 metre line, or in line with the black dot on the crossbar.
Green, who is part of the NRL’s competition committee that proposed some of the new rules, said he thinks the latest innovations will bring more unpredictability to the game.
“It’s always good to get those guys in to ref some of the opposed and scrimmage stuff we do,” Green said.
“It’s a little bit more realistic but it’s also good for us to pick up on cues of what they actually mean when they say certain things, so it’s good practice.
“We’ll wait and see how different teams approach it but hopefully it will have the desired effect, bring a bit more unpredictability into the game and a bit more attacking focus.
“Particularly off those scrums.”
Meanwhile, five-eighth Te Maire Martin continues to train with the Cowboys before a specialist appointment in the coming weeks.
The 24-year-old was diagnosed with a small bleed on the brain last season and was sidelined indefinitely.
He remains without an NRL contract for 2020.
“Until he has that and we get a final word from (doctors) I’m not sure where we’re at,” Green said.
“He’s been relatively symptom free, I won’t say completely symptom free.
“With something as serious as what he had you’ve got to take all precautions.
“It’s good just to have him around.”
