Supercars’ Mostert claims Daytona success

Supercars star Chaz Mostert will be primed for this weekend’s Bathurst 12 Hour race at Mount Panorama after claiming success at Daytona’s 24 hour enduro in the United States.

Former Bathurst 1000 champion Mostert combined with fellow drivers Jesse Krohn, John Edwards and Augusto Farfus to win GTLM class honours at the Rolex 24 for their BMW team in Florida on Sunday.

It was the BMW team’s second straight win in the GTLM class – one of four in the Daytona 24 hour race – but Mostert’s maiden victory.

Mostert compared the Daytona win with his famous last to first 2014 Bathurst triumph with Paul Morris.

“The last feeling I’ve had like this victory is winning Bathurst,” Mostert told speedcafe website.

“It took 12 months for the 1000 to sink in and it’ll probably take 12 months for this to sink in.

“This race is so different (to Bathurst 1000) but just as intense. We couldn’t afford a mistake all day.”

Mostert won’t have much time to savour his US success.

He will fly back to Australia to contest Sunday’s Bathurst 12 Hour where he will combine with Farfus and Nicky Catsburg in a BMW M6 GT3 entry for Walkenhorst Motorsport.

Overall 23 drivers will be backing up from the Daytona 24 hour race to contest the Bathurst 12 Hour.

That contingent includes five-time IndyCar world champion Scott Dixon and Ryan Briscoe, who combined with Kamui Kobayashi and Renger van der Zande to claim Daytona 24 hour race overall honours for Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac DPi.

The Bathurst 12 Hour will feature 39 cars from 11 different GT3 manufacturers and drivers from 21 countries.

Besides Mostert, the Bathurst field will also contain Supercars drivers Craig Lowndes, Jamie Whincup, Shane van Gisbergen, David Reynolds, Garth Tander and Rick Kelly.

Bathurst 12 Hour practice starts on Friday with qualifying held the next day.
