Pangai vows not to curb aggression in 2020

Brisbane enforcer Tevita Pangai says he won’t be curbing his aggression when he returns from his latest suspension in 2020.

But Pangai admits he will have to play smarter if he wants to help the Broncos rebuild after their embarrassing 2019 NRL finals exit.

Pangai has had plenty of time to think about his game after his 2019 season was cut short by a five-match ban for a crusher tackle.

It ensured he was suspended for eight games from three separate offences last year.

But Pangai – who re-signed until the end of 2022 last year – claimed his approach would remain the same.

“Obviously I have to be aggressive. Seibs (coach Anthony Seibold) re-signed me for my aggression,” said Pangai, who will be available for selection in Brisbane’s season opener against North Queensland.

“I want to keep that. But with carry over points I have got to be a bit smarter.

“(But) that’s my game – a high intensity, power game. I try to make influential plays for my team and build off that.”

Pangai even claimed he was bit unlucky to face the judiciary so often last year, citing a two-week ban for a late tackle on Sydney Roosters’ Cooper Cronk in April and another week in July for a high shot on Gold Coast winger Phillip Sami.

“I thought two of them were unlucky … (they) were high speed, high intensity – it’s a fast game and sometimes things go wrong,” he said.

“I know where the line is but obviously if I go out not wanting to tackle then we are not going to win the game – we’ve got to tackle hard.

“I just want to make big plays and inspire my teammates. That’s what I feel I can bring and that’s what I try to do.”

And it seems Pangai will be doing plenty of tackling in 2020.

Pangai said defence had been the focus of their pre-season after their record 58-0 finals thrashing from Parramatta.

“Obviously we have to work hard (on defence) after the way we finished the season last year,” he said.
