Preview:
The traditional rivals have met three times in the AFLW, including the historic first-ever match in the League and the Blues have won all three encounters.
Having finally won a Round 1 AFLW match, there’s no doubting that the Magpies would love to break another hoodoo and finally get one over Carlton.
The Magpies did impress in their win over the West Coast Eagles last weekend at Victoria Park, falling behind in the first quarter only to romp home by 27 points.
There has been clear improvement for the Magpies who finished last year on the bottom of the overall ladder with Chloe Molloy who missed last season with a foot injury impressing and former Australian Netballer Sharni Layton harnessing her footy skills and even kicking a goal.
Initially the game would have had much interest regarding Bri Davey who defected from Carlton to the Magpies playing against her old side, but an injury which some feared the worst has been described as a “Lower leg” injury, she will sit out this match but not the season.
The Blues easily accounted for Richmond who made their AFLW debut last weekend.
Carlton dominated all night against the Tigers, who despite their efforts to stay in the fight, the Blues proved too strong – booting four goals in the third quarter which put the game beyond doubt.
They have depth.
Lucky McEvoy on debut managed to get the Rising Star nomination with her 12 disposals and their forward line combo of Tayha Harris and Darcy Vecciso looks something to behold.
Not to mention Maddy Prespakis – last years Rising Star winner who dominated with 21 disposals, five tackles and a goal. She also topped the coaches votes this week.
All three meetings between the Blues and Pies have been relatively one-sided Carlton’s way and it will be a good test to see how much Collingwood have improved against a team not making their league debut.
With that in mind, Carlton’s class and polish should be able to get the job done in this encounter and they should be in consideration to go all the way this season.
