Launceston Cup Tips, Field Preview and Selections – 2020

The Launceston Cup headlines a strong ten-race card in the Apple Isle on Wednesday and a fittingly smart field of stayers has been confirmed.

All the usual Tasmanian suspects will line up alongside a smart contingent of interstate raiders, but it is understandable to see the in-form Toorak Affair as race favourite only a couple of days from jump.

We’ve delved into the form of every horse in the field and you can find our 2020 Launceston Cup tips below.

Launceston Cup- Winner

No. 2 Taikomochi

The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Taikomochi has a class edge over the majority of his rivals in this field and is up to winning the Launceston Cup. The Snitzel gelding has been a quality performer for the stable for several seasons now and recorded a lovely win in the Listed Australia Day Stakes at Warwick Farm two back, before finishing two lengths fourth in the Hobart Cup last start. He’s another horse that is rock-hard fit and will take beating into the 2020 Launceston Cup.

Launceston Cup – 2ND

No. 4 Toorak Affair

It is simply impossible to argue with the career-best form that Toorak Affair has found this campaign and she will be hard to beat again in the Launceston Cup. The Toorak Toff mare has won six of her eight starts since resuming this time and has only improved with each effort and as the bar has been raised. She was simply outstanding when beating her rivals by close to two lengths in the Group 3 Hobart Cup a couple of weeks ago and she is clearly at peak fitness for this race. I can’t find a reason why she won’t be in the finish again.

Launceston Cup – 3RD

No. 3 Morton’s Fork

I have been a fan of Morton’s Fork since his three-year-old season for Godolphin and he looks the value in Launceston Cup betting at around the $14 mark (at publish). Now trained by Richard Litt, Morton’s Fork has returned several pleasing efforts this time in, winning the Listed Xmas Cup at Randwick in December and finishing second behind The Candy Man in the Shoot Out Quality at Eagle Farm, most notably. He ran home respectably to finish midfield in the Hobart Cup, and I think he’ll do something better here.

Launceston Cup – 4TH

No. 7 Dogmatic

It’s taken Dogmatic a few runs to tune up since resuming this time, but he is capable of a big performance on his day and with even luck, can fight out the finish of the Launceston Cup. The four-year-old son of Domesday has placed in two of his four starts this time, including a third placing over 2000m at Caulfield two back, finishing within a length of the in-form Vaucluse Bay. He’ll need luck from out wide but has been charged with carrying only 54kgs.
