Lafai handed ADVO, returns to hospital

St George Illawarra centre Tim Lafai has checked himself back into hospital after a Good Friday incident in his own home landed him in hot water.

Lafai was on Friday served with an apprehended domestic violence order after being taken to hospital with a hand injury following an incident at his house south of Wollongong.

Police have alleged Lafai punched several walls in his family home. There is no suggestion of any physical assault of his wife or children.

“At about 2pm on Friday April 10 officers from Lake Illawarra Police District were called to a house in Warrawong following a concern for welfare report,” a NSW Police spokeswoman said.

“A 28-year-old man was located lying in the backyard of the home. He was taken to Wollongong Hospital for treatment and hand injuries.

“Police have been told the man allegedly became aggressive after a domestic-related argument with a 27-year-old woman in the home before he allegedly punched a number of walls within the house.

“Upon release from hospital he was served an apprehended domestic violence order. Inquiries are continuing.”

Lafai has not been charged following the incident.

He returned to hospital on Sunday after news of the incident broke.

“We can confirm Tim has taken himself to hospital on Sunday morning,” Lafai’s agents at Runaway Sports Management said.

“Our main concern right now is the safety of both Tim and his young family.”

Lafai is not currently training with the Dragons, with all NRL players in self-isolation while the competition remains on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 28-year-old has played 165 NRL games for the Dragons and Canterbury, and 13 Tests for Samoa.

The Dragons confirmed on Sunday the player was the subject of a police inquiry and the NRL’s integrity unit had been notified.

“St George Illawarra are aware of a police matter involving Dragons centre Tim Lafai,” the club said in a statement.

“As this is a deeply personal and private matter, at this stage the Dragons will be making no further comment.”
