The Supercars season could conclude at Bathurst next February as a way to salvage the coronavirus-affected 2020 championship.
The series was halted in March after just one completed round, with a June return the best possible scenario.
But Supercars boss Sean Seamer now thinks recommencing without crowds at Winton in northern Victoria is unlikely.
He said everything is being considered, including mid-week races, to ensure the 14-round season is completed.
Seamer has flagged the championship finale being run at the iconic Mount Panorama track, coinciding with the Bathurst 12-hour event.
“It’s absolutely on the cards and under consideration at the moment,” Seamer told Fox Sports.
“It won’t be another (Bathurst) 1000, we’ll have to think of something different, like a sprint format.
“There is an opportunity for us to go there, and to potentially finish the season there in New South Wales.
“We know that it will be important for New South Wales if we can’t do it in Newcastle.
“If we need to extend the season, then we absolutely will do that.
“I think I’ve been pretty vocal, as a few people have been, about wanting to do more racing over summer, anyway.”
Seamer said he was confident racing will come back when government restrictions around mass gatherings are relaxed.
“The most likely scenario for us to go racing again is going to be with a limited amount of people to be onsite, with TV-only racing,” he said.
“We’ve got a big footprint, but we’ve already been talking to the teams about how we lower their head count.”
Two-time defending champion Scott McLaughlin tops the standings after winning race two of February’s Adelaide 500.
Practice sessions were held in Melbourne before the Australian Grand Prix was cancelled a day into the event with COVID-19 rapidly spreading across the world.
