Bernard Tomic’s career appears at the crossroads after he was dropped from Australia’s Davis Cup side amidst reports Tennis Australia will cut support funding for the 20-year-old due to his poor attitude.

TA director of tennis Craig Tiley said Tomic would be suspended from Australia’s opening Davis Cup tie in Taiwan next season as the rift between the former World No.27 and the game’s authorities continues to widen.

“Pat has made the decision early that for the first tie next year Bernard will not be selected,” Tiley told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“As a team, we just felt that part of the commitment that we make to athletes and athletes make to the sport is they always put 100 per cent commitment and effort in competing for their country …”

“I think you can draw a few parallels with Marinko (Matosevic). It’s very much along those lines. It’s not one specific incident, just an aggregation of his approach to the game.

“We just felt that this decision should provide additional motivation every time he walks on the court to be a total professional in his approach to not only his preparation but competing in the match and post-match.

“And it would be no different if he was the No.1 player in Australia, or the No.100 player, or a junior.”

According to Herald TA will cut Tomic’s supporting funding for the start of next year.

Matosevic’s poor effort in a dead rubber against South Korea in April cost him a place in the Australia’s loss to Germany in their world group play-off in September.

In that world group play-off Tomic’s efforts were questioned by both Davis Cup captain Pat Rafter and veteran Davis Cup coach Tony Roche.

The former Wimbledon quarter-finalist’s performances at the US Open this year also came under the spotlight amid accusations of tanking in a match against Andy Roddick.

Tomic slipped from a world ranking of 27 in June to 52 at season’s end this year.
