Tremain trumps Warner in T20 clash

David Warner squared off against Chris Tremain on Saturday night at the SCG in what would have been billed as a mismatch of epic proportions – that is if the latter’s name errantly popped up on the Big Bash League’s ubiquitous promotional material.

As it stood, in the lime green corner was Tremain – an unheralded paceman from tiny Yeoval, population 317, near Dubbo in western NSW.

The 21-year-old has played one first-class game for the Blues but is best known for his red-ball work with Sydney grade club University of NSW.

In the pink corner, Warner – arguably the world’s premier Twenty20 batsman and the man that most of the crowd of 15,279 had come to see.

The knockout came not from Warner’s willow, but the swing and pace of Tremain.

After a probing short ball, Tremain floated a wide delivery – a good way outside off stump.

The 26-year-old, earning more in his two-ball appearance than Tremain will in his entire BBL campaign, could not resist and wicketkeeper Ryan Carters snaffled the edge.

This was a special moment for Tremain, who spoke honestly of his BBL expectations last month.

“Its something I really haven’t a clue about,” he said.

“I’ve never really played with or against as big a names as the players that have been signed by the Thunder. I am going to cherish the opportunity to train and hopefully play with arguably the best Twenty20 cricketers in the world.”

He later bowled Nic Maddinson to claim figures of 2-27 and be the Thunder’s best on a night in which they dearly struggled.

One suspects his goals might soon need an adjustment.
