Katich fined for BBL umpire abuse

Perth Scorchers captain Simon Katich has been fined for abusing the umpires during Wednesday night’s rain-affected BBL loss to the Melbourne Stars.

Katich was fined $1250 for twice abusing the umpires – once when they ordered the teams to resume playing after the rain delay and again when the game finished a ball later.

He had been charged with three instances of abuse, but pleaded guilty to two and was cleared of the third.

The Perth skipper publicly labelled the finish to the WACA clash “farcical” in a post-match interview.

The Scorchers were bowled out for a record low 69, with the Stars notching 0-29 off two overs in reply, before having to come out after a heavy rain delay to face one more ball so a result could be declared.

Even Stars batsman Rob Quiney, who was at the crease when the game ended, said on Friday that while his side deserved their win, he was as confused as anyone about how it was achieved.

“I’ll leave that to the hierarchy and umpires to sort out … I think the right result came of it, I’m just not sure about the process,” Quiney said.

The Stars could face more rain interruptions on Saturday night against the Hobart Hurricanes at the MCG.
