Giant boost as star AFL trio passed fit

Greater Western Sydney’s bid to avoid slipping to a dreaded 1-3 AFL start has been bolstered, with three superstars passed fit.

Pugnacious forward Toby Greene and silky midfielder Josh Kelly will be among at least two inclusions for Friday’s preliminary-final rematch with Collingwood at Giants Stadium.

Coach Leon Cameron confirmed Greene (knee) and Kelly (calf) would be named in their 22-man team.

The All-Australian duo sat out the Giants’ spiteful 24-point loss to the Western Bulldogs but will be welcome additions for the blockbuster clash.

“Clearly Toby and Josh want to get their season kicked off again,” he told reporters on Thursday.

“They were disappointed in their own performances in the round-two game and then they didn’t have the opportunity to play last week.

“Having those guys in definitely injects a lot of confidence.”

Lachie Whitfield and Brent Daniels, who both suffered concussions last week, are also available after passing cognitive tests.

The Giants are staring down the barrel of falling to 1-3.

A loss to the red-hot Magpies would mathematically be a major dent to their top-four hopes, but Cameron isn’t reaching for the calculator just yet.

“I understand there’s going to be lots of ebbs and flows throughout the year,” he said.

“There’s a few sides that have probably started a bit slower than what they would have and we’re one of them.

“But equally there’s going to be lots of twists and turns. Whatever happens after round four, I’m not really worried about it at the moment.

“Round four is our clear focus and that is to take it to the Pies, who clearly sit up near the top of the ladder.

“We need to play a brand like we played last year and we need to find that and find it quickly.”

That late-season form catapulted GWS to a four-point win over Collingwood in last year’s memorable preliminary final.

The Giants were rank outsides but held on in the dying seconds to reach their first AFL decider and deny the Magpies a shot at grand-final redemption.

They find themselves wearing the underdog tag again, as Collingwood flies into the Harbour City as premiership favourites after their 44-point dismantling of St Kilda.

But Cameron has no plans to draw on the emotion of last year’s famous win to motivate his sputtering side.

“That’s done and dusted,” he said.

“We feel as though we match up well against them and they would probably say the same thing.

“Some of our players have probably dropped away a little bit in … in the past couple of weeks.

“They know who they are and they’re looking forward to righting those wrongs.”
