McClenaghan added to NZ Test squad

Promising New Zealand fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan will remain in South Africa for the upcoming two-Test series beginning in Cape Town next week.

McClenaghan comes in for Tim Southee, who was ruled out last week with a thumb injury.

Originally picked for the three-match Twenty20 series, the 26-year-old left-armer has started the tour well with five wickets in three matches, including 3-19 in the opening three-day warm-up match against South Africa A.

Coach Mike Hesson says McClenaghan earns his start after performing consistently well domestically and delivering a promising start on the South African tour.

“Mitchell is a talented and exciting young fast bowler who has the ability to unsettle batsmen with his pace and bounce,” Hesson said.

“We’re confident if the opportunity arises during the tour he’ll perform well during the Test series.”
