Wallace wants Titans to re-sign Proctor

Gold Coast veteran Jarrod Wallace wants the Titans to re-sign banned biter Kevin Proctor, saying he’s a great leader for their NRL club.

The off-contract Proctor was suspended for four matches on Tuesday night after being found guilty of biting Cronulla’s Shaun Johnson.

Wallace felt the penalty for his captain was “harsh” and that there wasn’t much to the incident.

He said he didn’t think it would harm Proctor’s reputation, with an otherwise exemplary record through his 12-year, 250-game career.

“I personally think it was harsh and I don’t think it will have any effect on him as he’s built a great name for himself in the NRL and he’s one of the best backrowers in the comp and he has been for a very long time,” Wallace said.

The prop said the Titans needed the experience that Proctor, a premiership winner with Melbourne and Kiwi international, brought to the club and called on them to extend his contract.

“Absolutely – it’s guys like him who build sides,” Wallace said.

“His competitiveness, his love for this club and team, being a Gold Coast boy, and his experience – you need guys like him who have won comps and played Tests so I think having him here definitely makes us a better team.

“The club really needs to look at locking him down and keeping him here as a very important part of our team.”

Wallace said their captain would be sorely missed in their Saturday afternoon clash with Canberra at Cbus Super Stadium.

“Definitely, massively – he’s been in some great form and playing some real good footy,” Wallace said of the second-rower.

“He’s making Ash’s (Ashley Taylor) job and that left edge a lot easier having him there.

“It’s going to massive as he gets through a lot of work for us, he gives us a lot of confidence with that experience that he has so he will be missed for sure.”

Proctor is due to return for the final two rounds.
