Tyzone out to stake Epsom Handicap claims in Shannon Stakes

The likelihood of Stradbroke Handicap winner Tyzone running in the Epsom Handicap will hinge on his second-up performance at Rosehill.

Co-trainer Toby Edmonds will assess how Tyzone copes with his first attempt at 1500 metres in Saturday’s Group Two Shannon Stakes before deciding if the gelding backs up a week later in the Group One Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick.

“We’re a bit unsure about a mile with him,” Edmonds said.

“Well know more after the Shannon. If he goes through the line we’re happy to go to the Epsom.

“If not, we would think about the Yes Yes Yes which is a 1300 metre weight-for-age race worth a million dollars a few weeks after that.”

Tyzone opened his spring carnival campaign by running eighth to Wild Planet in the Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill on September 12.

Edmonds has locked in an Epsom start for Vanna Girl after she finished ninth to Dreamforce in the Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on September 5.

“She was looking for the mile first up the way she raced,” Edmonds said.

“It wasn’t really run to suit and she was only warming up the last 100 metres.

“With a month between runs, a nice tune-up trial in between, I don’t think going into the Epsom second up is going to be a big issue.

“She’s got good residual fitness from last preparation and we thought if we ran her again she’d be too dour for the mile.”
