The 2020 Ladbrokes Cox Plate favourite Russian Camelot has been installed as the top chance in Saturday’s $750,000 Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield.
A small field of 10 will be chasing Danny O’Brien’s talented Irish stayer as he hopes to add a second Group 1 win to his growing resume on the way to bigger and better things later in the Spring.
Black Heart Bart famously won this race at 100-1 last year, so recent history is certainly on the side of punters looking to back against the short-priced favourite.
To give you an added advantage, we’ve cast our eyes over each and every horse in our 2020 Underwood Stakes tips below.
Gailo Chop
Three time Group 1 winner Gailo Chop has struggled to find his best form at this level since running second in the Kingston Town Stakes at Ascot last December.
The 10-year-old was simply outclassed first-up in the Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington where he missed the start, costing him a chance to settle into his usual leading position up front.
He has won second-up previously, but looks better suited in his return to Perth later in the year.
Humidor
Humidor caught everyone off guard a fortnight ago winning the Group 2 Feehan Stakes in his return to the races as an 18-1 shot.
The eight-year-old actually tends to do his best racing second-up where he’s won four from eight starts, and he obviously wants further now after exploding over the final 100m to win his last start by less than half a length.
After running third in the Underwood back in 2018, Humidor has to be respected in what will be only his second run under trainer Chris Waller.
Trap For Fools
Trap For Fools hasn’t been seen at the races since April where he ran on for third in the Diggers Cup (1800m) on Anzac Day at Ascot.
The Lindsey Smith-trained galloper finished seventh in last years Underwood, but is likely to find this a touch too sharp in his return to the races.
Levendi
It’s been a while in between drinks for the Peter Gelagotis-trained Levendi, with his last win coming in the the Group 1 ATC Derby at Randwick back in 2018.
The six-year-old son of Pierro will need to improve significantly on his first-up performance when 11 of 16 in the Makybe Diva Stakes and appears tested here.
So Si Bon
So Si Bon is having his fourth run back from a spell after putting in a brave effort for third in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes last fortnight.
The seven-year-old will meet a few of his rivals again on Saturday and does rate as an each-way chance with three wins to his name at Caulfield.
If the track rates somewhere in the heavy range, he isn’t the worst.
Mr Quickie
Mr Quickie has enjoyed a three week break between runs after grabbing second in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes first-up last month.
The son of Shamus Award has won two-from-four starts second-up and has also found the placings in four of his six starts at Caulfield.
Whether he handles a potential rain affected track is the main query though, especially from the wide draw.
The Chosen One
The Chosen One found the placings in the Group 1 Sydney Cup during the Autumn and looked in superb order a fortnight ago winning first-up at Flemington over the 1700m by a length.
The Baker and Forsman-trained gelding ran a luckless ninth in last year’s Underwood from a similar gate under Damian Lane, but should get a better chance this time around if Michael Dee can settle just off the speed.
With a win to his name second-up, The Chosen One looks capable of running into the money.
Harbour Views
Harbour Views put in a bold performance for third first-up in the Group 2 Feehan Stakes and could run another big race with a strong 2-1 record to his name second-up.
The Matthew Williams-trained gelding has drawn away from the rails this time and also won at Caulfield last September under John Allen.
Harbour Views has Caulfield form around Buffalo River from back in the Autumn and should be doing his best work late from midfield.
Arcadia Queen
Arcadia Queen turned in an eye-catching run for second in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes at Flemington as she now eyes off her second Group 1.
Jockey William Pike was please with the way she hit the line behind Pretty Brazen, an effort she is sure to improve on in what will be her third run in Melbourne.
The Grant and Alana Williams-trained mare won over this distance in the Group 1 Kingston Town Stakes at Ascot back in 2018, although the added threat of rain could make things tricky from the inside draw on Saturday.
Russian Camelot
Trainer Danny O’Brien will be hoping to claim another Group 1 with Russian Camelot on his way to either the Caulfield Cup or the Ladbrokes Cox Plate next month.
The superstar stayer has easily been one of the most exciting horses to watch this year and it is no surprise to find him at very short odds to win the Underwood.
The Irish import was simply brilliant running on for second behind Fierce Impact in the Makybe Diva Stakes, a performance he is sure to build on as he gets out over further.
O’Brien’s four-year-old finished second over this distance in the Listed Connoisseur Stakes at Flemington last Spring and should be found doing his best work late on Saturday from the wide draw.
