Tigers to kick off 2020 AFLW draft

After a winless inaugural AFLW season, Richmond will have the opportunity to add the best young women’s footballer to their list at Tuesday’s AFLW draft.

Classy midfielder Ellie McKenzie shapes as Richmond’s likely No.1 pick, with the Western Bulldogs then expected to pounce on her Northern Knights teammate, key forward Alyssa Bannan.

The draft order was based on a composite ladder created from the two AFLW conferences, with the Tigers finishing on the bottom and handed Pick No.1, and was then significantly changed by the AFLW trade period.

The draft, which kicks off at 7pm AEDT and will be held in a virtual format for the first time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be based at AFL House, with clubs dialling in to make their selections.

The drafts are state-based, with players nominating for the state they wish to play in. If players are not selected in their nominated draft, they can be approached by interstate clubs.

Every state bar Victoria has had some variety of state league football this year, while there were just three rounds of the under-18 NAB League Girls, meaning the Victorian clubs are relying heavily on the 2019 form of local talent.

Three draftees are already locked in, with father-daughter selections Alice Burke, Tarni Brown and Amy Smith headed to St Kilda, Collingwood and North Melbourne respectively.

Their respective draft positions – determined via a bidding process – will be confirmed on Tuesday night.

There are 16 picks in the first round with Richmond and West Coast both receiving end-of-first-round picks – which they then on-traded for established talent – as competition assistance.

Each club has at least three selections and clubs can pass on selections on draft night.
