Tigers eye midfielder with AFLW top pick

Richmond are set to pounce on Melbourne teenager Ellie McKenzie with the prized No.1 pick in Tuesday night’s AFLW Draft.

McKenzie, a creative, attacking midfielder and Northern Knights teammate Alyssa Bannan, a key forward, are expected to be the first two picks in the 2020 draft.

Richmond, who went winless in their inaugural AFLW season and are currently without a senior coach, received the No.1 pick after the draft order was created based on a composite ladder created from the two AFLW conferences.

The remainder of the draft order changed significantly after the trade and signing period.

Beyond young gun Monique Conti, the Tigers’ midfield struggled to go with the AFLW’s best in their first season and the classy McKenzie would significantly bolster their on-ball division.

The Western Bulldogs, who have three picks in the first round, are then likely to take Bannan with Pick No.2.

Players nominate for the state they wish to be drafted to – meaning the draft is effectively split into state-based drafts.

If they are overlooked, they can then be approached by interstate clubs about potentially moving.

Three players already know their destinations – father-daughter selections Alice Burke, Tarni Brown and Amy Smith, who are headed to St Kilda, Collingwood and North Melbourne respectively.

Their draft positions – determined via a bidding process – will be confirmed on Tuesday night.

The draft kicks off at 7pm AEDT and will be held in a virtual format for the first time due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The clubs, who each have at least three picks, will dial in to AFL House to make their selections.

Clubs can pass on selections on draft night.
