Suns open to trading key AFL draft pick

Gold Coast will consider trading their first-round AFL draft pick if the right player becomes available to help with a push towards a breakthrough AFL finals appearance.

But Suns coach Stuart Dew admits he has never spoken to Collingwood midfielder Adam Treloar, who has been linked with a move to Queensland.

The 27-year-old’s partner Kim Ravaillion will sign with the Queensland Firebirds for next year’s Super Netball season.

The star midfielder, who is contracted for next season, wants to remain at Collingwood but Treloar and Ravaillion have a young child together.

Treloar has previously spoken about how vital Ravaillion has been in his battle to overcome significant mental health challenges.

Dew said Gold Coast will look into recruiting a quality experienced player this off-season, whether it is Treloar or someone else.

“I’ve actually never spoken to Adam in my life. He’s obviously a fantastic player but he’s a contracted Collingwood player and we certainly don’t see that changing,” he told Fox Footy.

“We’ve got pick five or six in the draft and that’s something we would be open to trading if one of those types of players; probably in that middle-band of 25 (years) plus.

“But also careful not to tip too far the other way, where we become just a pension for a player as well.

“We feel like we’re getting into a nice little spot with a bit of momentum that we want to make sure who we bring in certainly fits our need.”

The emerging Suns won five games this season and look to finally be about to rise up the ladder.

They have never made the AFL finals in their 10-season existence, but will be boosted next year by the return of young star Matt Rowell, who played a major role in three victories before injuring his shoulder in round five.
