Origin a bucket list ambition for Green

Her NRLW experience with the Warriors has been a thrill and Ellia Green admits she’d love to continue her rugby league journey in a NSW State of Origin jersey.

The Australian rugby sevens star’s debut NRLW season wraps up on Saturday when the Warriors face St George Illawarra in a dead rubber at ANZ Stadium.

Although she’s yet to taste victory in her two matches for the New Zealand-based club, Green says she’s found a second family in the hastily patched together team.

A return to her rugby commitments looms after this weekend’s NRLW match against the Dragons but Green says if she can find a way to play in the women’s Origin match on the Sunshine Coast on November 13, she’d jump at the opportunity.

“It’s definitely something I’ve thought about,” Green said.

“I don’t know if it will be on the cards for me in terms of balancing it with sevens, considering I’m going back in November, but it’s definitely on my bucket list.

“I’m hoping I do get an opportunity to play Origin.”

With the Tokyo Games postponed 12 months and the international competition on hold due to COVID-19, Green has revelled in the chance to play competitive sport over the past fortnight.

While her body has been battered by the higher-impact collisions in rugby league and the Warriors are yet to win, she said the experience has been hugely memorable.

“This team has so quickly, in such a short time, become a second family to me,” the Fiji-born flyer said.

“The Warriors have such an amazing culture and I love being around so many different diverse backgrounds – Islanders, Indigenous, Aussies – it’s just a really great combination of players.

“To have that game time and that competitiveness in the contact has been awesome, and just a different environment has been really exciting.

“Being able to make new friends in a different code has been just really refreshing and I’ve loved it so far.”
