The $700,000 Galaxy is the final Group 1 on the program at Rosehill on Saturday as an exciting field of sprinters step out over the 1100m.
Godolphin four-year-old Tailleur tops the betting following her impressive win in the Triscay Stakes last time out, while the Snowden team is looking to win the race for a second time with talented colt Wild Ruler.
With the winner also exempt from ballot for the upcoming Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes at Randwick, this shapes as a very important race with connections eying a spot in the $2.5 million feature during The Championships.
To help you out, we’ve run the rule over each runner in our 2021 The Galaxy Preview right here.
Eduardo
Eduardo returned to the races in great order a fortnight ago to win the Group 2 Challenge Stakes in a memorable photo finish over the short-priced favourite Nature Strip at Randwick.
Nash Rawiller chose to sit one-off the speed that day, a tactic he’ll likely look to employ again on Saturday with a handful likely to push forward.
The seven-year-old now gets his chance to win a Group 1 for the first time and is no doubt a serious winning chance with two wins to his name over the trip.
He’s done some of his best racing second-up from a spell, and the fact he’s won previously on soft and heavy going is a big tick.
Dirty Work
Dirty Work is having his second run back from a spell after bursting clear from mid-field to run fifth in the Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield.
The son of Written Tycoon was a very consistent customer during the spring where he finished 1.5L fourth to Classique Legend over this trip in The Shorts at Randwick, before going on to win the Shillachi Stakes two weeks later back at Caulfield.
He’s since had a trial between runs, and although he won’t want it too wet, he does rate as one of the better each-way plays with fitness on his side.
Fabergino
Fabergino’s recent form makes for easy reading after showing her class three weeks ago to win a Listed race at Flemington over shorter.
The mare by Maschino was unlucky not to grab a place two runs back in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes at Flemington, but she should be better suited here getting back out to the 1100m where she’s won twice previously.
The wet track is a query, but she did look in exceptional order during Monday’s trial where she led all the way. Worth a thought in multiples.
Haut Brion Her
Haut Brion Her gets her chance to record a maiden Group 1 victory.
The Zoustar mare returns to the races as the second-elect on Saturday after working home to beat Dirty Work and Bella Vella at the trials last month.
Chris Waller’s five-year-old has handled soft tracks in the past, most notably finishing runner-up to Gytrash in last year’s Yes Yes Yes Stakes on a Heavy 9.
She also won the Group 2 Sheraco Stakes during the spring first-up from a spell and rates highly to return to the winner’s stall.
Jungle Edge
The wetter the better for Jungle Edge.
While a Group 1 has eluded him so far, Mick Bell’s 10-year-old veteran is easily one of the best wet trackers in the country.
As we saw four years ago when he finished third in this same race behind Russian Revolution and Redzel, the mudlark often mops up a wet Sydney track.
Despite a forgettable performance first-up in the Challenge Stakes, he can’t be underestimated with poor conditions forecast.
Order Of Command
Order Of Command faces Group 1 company for only the second time in his career, but that isn’t to say he’s outclassed.
Danny O’Brien’s six-year-old has been a consistent customer over the last six months, capping off his spring with a pair of placings at Flemington and Sandown before holding ground for third first-up in the Group 3 Maurice McCarten Stakes over the same track and trip.
This is obviously tougher, but with four wins to his name second-up, he warrants plenty of respect.
Easy Eddie
Easy Eddie is on the quick backup after finishing second to California Zimbol in the Group 3 Maurice McCarten Stakes last week over the same track and trip.
The six-year-old finished third in this race two years ago behind Nature Strip, while he did appear to have plenty left in reserve last week once he got clear.
Considering he’s made only three starts over the last calendar year though, a place looks his best chance.
Jonker
Jonker resumes from a freshen-up after taking out the Magic Millions Sprint on the Gold Coast back in January.
The Tony Gollan yard is flying right now, but the wet track does this make this a tough assignment for him in his maiden Group 1.
Splintex
Splintex is capable of improving on his first-up run as he puts his unbeaten record at Rosehill on the line.
The son of Snitzel failed to finish off first-up in the Challenge Stakes, but he does tend to take a few runs to warm up.
He was no match at this level during the spring running second-last in the Manikato Stakes at The Valley, but he does look capable of running a cheeky race with a couple of wins to his name on heavy going.
Bella Vella
Bella Vella is having her second run back from a spell after working home late for third in the Challenge Stakes at Randwick.
She looked well on her way to winning a big race during the spring after taking out the Group 2 McEwen first-up at Moonee Valley, only to pull up late in the Manikato to run last.
The six-year-old did win the Robert Sangster Stakes at Morphettville on a Soft 7 last year, however, a run that suggests she should handle the sting out of the track.
She should get a gun run along the inside and is probably a touch over the odds.
Fiesta
Fiesta found herself too far back first-up in the Group 3 Weona Girl Quality at Randwick, but she did make up plenty of late ground for fifth.
The mare by I Am Invincible won back-to-back Group 3’s in Melbourne during the spring and is also a perfect three-from-three over the 1100m.
She’ll need to improve sharply on recent efforts, but does rate as a knockout chance with some weight off her back.
Tailleur
Tailleur is shooting for her hat-trick on Saturday after scoring her first black-type win in the Group 3 Triscay Stakes at Randwick last month.
The Godolphin mare has been kept fresh for The Galaxy and looked in superb order during last week’s trial at Kembla Grange.
The daughter of Shooting To Win has found the money in all eight starts so far and could not have responded any better when the pressure came last time out in the Triscay.
With the in-form Rachel King carrying only 51kg in the saddle, the pair should take a power of beating.
Wild Ruler
The Snowden’s won this race four years ago with Russian Revolution and they look to have a legitimate shot at claiming the prize-money again on Saturday with Wild Ruler.
The lightly-raced Snitzel colt has missed the money only once from eight attempts and could not have been any more impressive first-up winning the Listed Fireball Stakes at Randwick by a comfortable margin.
The three-year-old held his own at this level during the spring running a very bold third to September Run and Swats That in the Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington, a performance he can only improve on now as he targets bigger races.
Kerrin McEvoy rode him to a win on debut two years ago at Randwick, and with 5kg off his back, there’s no doubt he’s one of the horses to beat.
The Odyssey
They Odyssey won the Magic Millions QTIS Open Handicap on the Gold Coast back in January, but was no match in his return to work running second-last in the Challenge Stakes.
He has handled wet tracks in the past, but he’ll only find this tougher.
