Let’s just get the important preliminary stuff out of the way first, there may be nothing funnier in 2021 than England getting by Germany only to lose to the Ukraine.

Before this match kicks off there is every chance I’ll talk myself into having a small bet on a Ukrainian upset but it’s not the play for this post.

To their credit, the English have been nothing short of perfect at the back and while their pragmatic style is drawing plenty of criticism, it is also producing results.

Four matches, zero defeats and four clean sheets, it’s effective tournament football from the English team.

It will be put to the test against a Ukrainian side that knows it has already overachieved and will have nothing to lose heading into this match.

A slightly more sensitive manager may opt to send England out to make a statement against an opponent they are heavy favourites against however I can’t see Southgate taking that approach.
