2021 Cox Plate pair in doubt to race

Gold Trip and Callsign Mav will undergo further vet examinations after showing signs of lameness in the lead up to the Cox Plate.

Racing Victoria inspected all 10 runners engaged in Saturday’s Group 1 showpiece over 2040m at The Valley and said Gold Trip and Callsign Mav presented with lameness.

New Zealander Callsign Mav was showing signs of lameness in his near foreleg.

The John Bary-trained galloper has been stabled with Danny O’Brien in Melbourne and has been attended to by a stable vet and farrier and has not missed any work.

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Gold Trip was displaying lameness in his off fore and off hind leg.

Gold Trip has been under a cloud since his arrival in Melbourne last month, displaying signs of lameness, which Mahar had shrugged off as stiffness.

The Maher and Eustace stable said the entire had not missed any work.

News of the pair requiring further vet tests has seen Gold Trip drifting out the $12 with TAB while Callsign Mav is a $51 chance behind Zaaki who is the $2.90 favourite.

Both Gold Trip and Callsign Mav will be re-examined on Friday.
