Oh sizzles in Ladies Masters charge

Sixteen-year-old amateur Su-Hyun Oh planned to celebrated her career-low round of 64 with cookies and cream-flavoured ice cream and television.

The Australian amateur squad member appeared far more excited by an impending practice round with Karrie Webb before this month’s Australian Women’s Open, than having just played her way to the top of the Ladies Masters leaderboard at Royal Pines with a spectacular eight-under-par round.

Oh has a chance on Sunday to repeat Amy Yang’s effort as the last and only amateur to win the Masters.

“I don’t really feel too excited,” the world’s No.5-ranked amateur said innocently after draining a five-metre eagle on her final hole to leap into the lead on 10-under.

She punched the air in delight after her eagle putt disappeared into the cup on the 18th green.

But the youngster, who created history aged 12 as the youngest amateur to qualify for the Australian Women’s Open in 2009, was composed and calm 15 minutes later when she faced the media.

“All the other members of the (Australian) squad have met her (Webb), but not me,” she smiled.

“But I am playing a practice round with her before the Open (in Canberra) … she’s really a legend.”

After her immaculate eight-under round – which included six birdies and her last hole eagle – she could yet be playing in one of the final groups with Webb on Sunday afternoon if the Queenslander posts a low afternoon score.

The modest teenager wasn’t talking or even thinking about beating Webb or the other world-ranked players in the tournament on Sunday despite showcasing some wonderful shot-making talents of her own.

She left a seven-metre eagle putt centimetres short on the par-5 15th hole for a tap-in birdie which would have given her a stunning 63.

Oh said she wouldn’t let nerves get the better of her on Sunday when she attempts to replicate Yang’s incredible feat.

“I don’t really feel nervous at the moment,” she said.

And how did she plan to prepare for her biggest golfing moment?

“I don’t know – watch TV and eat some ice cream. I bought a whole tub yesterday (Friday) … cookies and cream. My trainer won’t be happy, but oh well.”
