Champion jockey Damien Oliver has been taken to hospital for precautionary scans following a barrier incident at Warrnambool.
Oliver, an 11-time Scobie Breasley Medalist, made a rare trip to Warrnambool on Thursday to ride for Rosemont Stud who had horses racing at the meeting in the care of Danny O’Brien along with Anthony and Sam Freedman.
After filling a place earlier in the program aboard the O’Brien-trained Sconaero, Oliver was booked to ride another O’Brien runner Ethekwini in the final event on the eight-race program.
Ethekwini played up in the barriers and along with Fortune Rose was withdrawn from the race.
Oliver was attended by medical personal on track before being placed on a stretcher and transported to hospital.
“After an incident in the barriers at Warrnambool, Damien Oliver is off to hospital for precautionary scans on his neck,” the Victorian Jockeys’ Association said in a statement.
Oliver, who sits second on the Melbourne Jockeys’ Premiership, six winners behind Jye Mcneil, has been booked for two rides at The Valley on Friday night and a further seven at the Caulfield meeting on Saturday, including the $2.60 favourite Renosu for Godolphin in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes.
