Placement is the key to winning races and understanding the ability of your horse.

Trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman have been able to pick up ‘Black Type’ with two-year-old filly Bistro and hope to add some more in the new season.

The Freedman stable has their eyes on the Group 3 Quezette Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on August 13, but first there is a lead-up race at The Valley on Saturday, the Ladbrokes Mates Mode Handicap (955m).

The Freedmans racing manager Brad Taylor said Bistro was on the small side and may not be competitive against the bigger and stronger fillies later in the spring and that is part of the reason she is ready to go on Saturday.

Bistro won the Listed Cinderella Stakes at Morphettville in March and after one more start, again in Adelaide, the following month was sent for a break.

“We made the conscious decision to get her back in early, give her a run and then look to run her in the Quezette,” Taylor said.

“We’re happy with her. She trialled really well at Werribee last Friday, but she’s got to carry the penalty and she’s not overly big, so that is a little question mark.

“There is a few down on the bottom of the handicap, but being a stakes horse, a winner of a couple of races, she deserves that penalty.

“She’s got a bit of residual fitness, but the aim is to have her ready for the Quezette and take on a few of the others that may be first-up.”

Jamie Kah, who rode Bistro to success at Morphettville, has the ride on Saturday.

Taylor said her quiet style will suit the filly as will the sharp 955m journey.

“She’s not overly big and is a winner over 1000 metres and Jamie gets on well with her,” Taylor said.

“She’s a filly that may not get much further than 1100 metres, so the plan is the Quezette and then maybe freshen her up for the (Group 3) Red Roses up the straight during Cup week.”
