Wales go into the World Cup having lost five and drawn one of their six June-to-September Uefa Nations League matches, but manager Rob Page will not be overly concerned.

The European mini-tournament pits closely ranked teams together and the Welsh were always going to be up against it in a top-tier group containing the Netherlands, Belgium and Poland.

The nature of those results was frustrating rather than troubling. Wales drew against 2018 World Cup semi-finalists Belgium and lost three times to goals conceded in the 85th minute or later – including injury-time defeats against the Netherlands both in Rotterdam and Cardiff.

In any case, Welsh focus was always on a World Cup qualification playoff against Ukraine that had to be rescheduled to land in the middle of their Nations League fixtures, so little should be drawn from those matches.

Page’s team remains well-drilled, experienced in tournament football and sprinkled with a bit of magic. Dan James provides pace on the break, Ben Davies and Aaron Ramsey add composure and Gareth Bale brings elite, match-winning quality.

The five-time Uefa Champions League winner will doubtless be eager to impress in this match against the USA, where he now plays his club football for Los Angeles FC.

And, fitness providing, Bale will have every chance to do that against a United States side whose form is a worry.

Gregg Berhalter’s team come into the World Cup having won just one of their last five matches – a 5-0 rout of minnows Grenada – and poor displays in their September warm-up fixtures have given American fans cause for concern.

A 2-0 defeat to Japan was followed by a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia, and in neither game did the US give a sense that any of the frailties which undermined their qualifying campaign were any closer to being resolved.

Berhalter has a young squad, with elder statesmen such as Michael Bradley, Jose Altidore, Clint Dempsey and Tim Howard sidelined following their failed attempt to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. And while that process was a necessary one it was perhaps a little rushed, with a mass clearout leaving the dressing room short of experience and goals.

Few of those players would have had the legs to compete in Qatar but a more gradual off-ramp for the veterans might have helped the handover to the new generation.

While the squad is now packed with pace and urgency, a lack of quality and cohesion undermines them at both ends of the pitch. Berhalter’s players have failed to score in six of their seven matches this year against teams to have qualified for Qatar 2022, losing 2-0 to both Costa Rica and Canada en route to a disappointing third-place finish in Concacaf World Cup qualifying.

There is some goalscoring and creative talent in the likes of Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic and Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie, but only two other players in the US squad have scored double figures at international level, with Jordan Morris and Paul Arriola scoring 11 and ten respectively at a poor rate of a goal almost every five games.

They face a Wales team that is not the force it was when Bale and Ramsey were at their peak to drive the Dragons to the semi-finals of the 2016 European Championships.

However, the Welsh drew against Belgium in Uefa Qualifying Group E and took four points off a decent Czech Republic side. Page’s men then followed up with single-goal victories over Austria and Ukraine in the playoffs – a far-from easy route to Qatar.

The sparkle may have dimmed a little, and the potential absence of Joe Allen’s midfield graft is a concern, but the Welsh remain a resilient, organised side who can withstand the USA press.
