De Sonic Boom will be set on a path to the Blue Diamond Stakes after her debut win at Sandown.
The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained filly took out the filly’s division of the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) on Thursday to give the stable hope of a third straight win in Melbourne’s premier two-year-old race.
The Freedman father-and-son combination won the Blue Diamond Stakes last year with Daumier with Artorius successful in 2021.
Lyre took the race in 2019 for Anthony giving the team three of the last four winners.
Ridden by Blake Shinn, De Sonic Boom ($13) scored a three-quarter length win from Zousuko ($26) with Sensical ($9.50) a long-head away third.
Sam Freedman said De Sonic Boom was a filly the stable had a good opinion of but had been left a little flat by her first couple of trials.
“We were wondering whether to tip her out, but we gave her one more trial and she pulled-up super,” Freedman said.
“She’s kept improving throughout the whole prep.
“She gets down lower and lower when you ask her to improve and we thought the 1000 metres might have been a little bit sharp for her, which it might have been.
“But she’s got a lot of scope, she’s very sensible, she’s got some ‘black type’ at her first start, and she will go towards the Blue Diamond now.
“We’ll probably see her in a couple of weeks in a Prelude.”
The Group 2 filly’s division of the Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) will be run at Sandown on February 11 with the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) two weeks later.
Shinn said De Sonic Boom had a smart racing brain while the race had been set up to suit.
“Her racing style of getting back and running on, it suited, but she still had to do it,” Shinn said.
“She was a long way back, but we just bided our time, gave her some confidence.
“She’s got a good brain on her and is prepared by top two-year-old trainers who presented her in good order and made my job easy.”
