Carlton Blues vs Geelong Cats Preview
The stage is set for another Thursday belter between two sides playing with a point to prove.
A draw to start the season wasn’t the result Michael Voss would have been after last week against Richmond, and while two points is better than none, the low-scoring slugfest has cast further questions over a club that boasts serious top four aspirations.
Geelong, on the other hand, will be hungry as ever to bounce back from a disheartening fourth quarter performance against Collingwood last Friday night.
The Cats looked a well-oiled machine for the most part, but with Tom Stewart off and the Daicos boys wreaking havoc, Geelong simply failed to match Collingwood’s desperate momentum when it mattered most.
Not surprisingly, the market is well in favour of Geelong – largely due to their outstanding 4-0 record on the back of a loss last year.
In some ways, an early defeat might be just what the doctor ordered for the reigning premiers, a wake-up whilst also taking some of the pressure off their growing win streak.
The Blues have found the Cats a tough task in recent times winning only once in their last five meetings, while they won’t hold particularly fond memories of their 30-point belting last year.
After failing to impact the scoreboard and struggling to take a mark inside 50 last week – two worrying signs for a team that boasts back-to-back Coleman Medal winners – it’s fair to say the pressure is firmly on Carlton this week.
Unfortunately, they still look a little one-dimensional moving the ball forward for mine, which doesn’t bode well against a Geelong team that can beat you in many different ways.
After a quiet night, expect Tom Hawkins to leave his mark on this game and the Cats to erase the word “hangover” from everyone’s vocabulary.
