Collingwood Magpies vs Port Adelaide Power Preview
A week is a long time in footy.
Plenty had Port Adelaide marked as a bottom four contender with Ken Hinkley sacked by Round 10, but on the back of a commanding 54-point win over the Lions last week, the Power find themselves in a very different conversation.
The inclusion of Charlie Dixon really flicked a switch for Port at home, while former No. 1 overall draft pick Jason Horne-Francis was dazzling in his club debut amassing 25 disposals and a goal.
Overreactions are all the rage this time of year though, and the Power are about to receive a serious reality check against a Collingwood side that looked every bit a flag contender last Friday night against Geelong.
It was touch and go at times, but like they did so often last season, the Pies rose to the occasion in the fourth quarter to record a dominant 22-point win over the reigning premiers, spearheaded by none other than the Daicos boys.
Collingwood’s pressure was immense last week and their work around the stoppages was what won them the game.
Port controlled this same area against the Lions, but as the Cats found out the hard way, unless Hinkley plans on tagging Nick Daicos, the Power could be at the mercy of one of the most accurate kicks in the game.
Looking back, these two sides have put on some real classics in recent years, Port winning three of the last five meetings, but Collingwood prevailing in their lone date last year 88-82.
Taking nothing away, I think last week’s game was more about Brisbane’s capitulation on both sides of the ball than Port’s overall dominance.
If this was in Adelaide, I’d feel more confident in backing the Power to keep this close, but with Tom Mitchell adding some serious firepower up the ground and the rest of the list even hungrier to build on last year, I don’t see Collingwood losing anytime soon.
