In-form gelding Right for Easter Cup 2023

Right You Are didn’t get a chance to test his Australian Cup credentials, but David Eustace is eyeing a consolation victory this Saturday at Sandown.

The rejuvenated gelding will be one of two runners for Eustace and his training partner Ciaron Maher in the $200,000 Easter Cup.

The six-year-old missed the Australian Cup with a minor hoof problem, but rebounded quickly and Eustace said the gelding will be fit to take his place in the 2000-metre Group 3.

“We just had a foot issue which came at the wrong time, but he seems OK. It was just unfortune timing,” Eustace said.

“This is the right sort of race for him for where he’s at.”

The son of So You Think will be chasing a sixth-straight win after progressing from a couple of benchmark 84 wins in early summer to win the $200,000 Australian Cup Prelude (2000m) on March 11.

Right You Are will be joined in the Easter Cup by stablemate Mankayan, who was last seen finishing third as favourite in the Listed Albury Cup (2000m).

That was the Intello seven-year-old’s third run of the campaign, having also finished third in the Wangaratta Cup (2000m) the start prior and Eustace said the Albury effort took little out of him.

“Her ran third at Albury and ran well but didn’t get much luck,” he said.

“He’s come through the run well, he only had a soft run, so this looks a good race for him, too.”

The Easter Cup is one of three Black Type events at Sandown on Easter Saturday, accompanied by the Victoria Handicap – also a Group 3 event worth $200,000 – and the $175,000 Listed Redoute’s Choice Stakes (1200m).
