Fremantle Dockers vs Western Bulldogs Preview
This one shapes as a potential ‘line in the sand’ game on Friday night between two sides with plenty left to prove.
Fremantle scratched and clawed its way to victory over the Suns last week, an important win for a club that had seemingly gone wayward after shaping as a genuine flag contender before the season began.
After trailing by three goals at half-time, Michael Walters and Caleb Serong spearheaded an inspiring second-half comeback to win by 10 points, but fans will be calling for a thorough four-quarter performance this week despite dominating just about every major statistical category.
As for the Dogs, there might not be a more maddening team to try and work out.
Just when it looked like the Dogs were about to run right over Port in the second half, the Bulldogs suddenly hit a dry spell in front of the sticks – kicking just one goal to Port’s four in the final term.
It was yet another example of the Bulldogs failing to play out a full four quarters themselves, not to mention on a more individual level, the likes of Jack Macrae, Toby McLean, and Rory Lobb managing just one touch between them in the fourth quarter.
With all this in mind, this game is basically like splitting hairs to start the round.
You could hardly call a win over the struggling Suns a convincing turnaround, while for the Bulldogs, this is an enormous ask traveling from Adelaide to Perth in back-to-back rounds.
Looking back, the Dogs have won three of their last five meetings against Freo, but it’s worth noting four of them have been decided by a margin of 1-39 points.
Frankly, this is the type of game I’d be steering clear of, but with the Dogs struggling mightily to find points at times, and the Dockers surprisingly ranked fifth in inside 50s, I think the Dockers 1-39 is the best way to play it.
