There was a glimmer of hope the Dockers were back as serious contenders, but they undid all their hard work with an underwhelming showing against the Dogs last week.

On paper, it’s a pretty simple task for the Dockers, who realistically need to play at 70%, and it will probably be good enough against a Gold Coast side that is a shell of itself on the road, still yet to win an interstate game.

In fact, the Suns have never beaten the Dockers at Optus, although it’s been a small sample size with only two games.

The Bulldogs showcased the blueprint to defeat the Dockers, ambushing their forward line with manic, chaotic entries that spread open the forward line.

As a result, expect the Dockers to lock down defensively and force the Suns to enter inside 50 with long kicks to the likes of Ben King.

The issue with the Suns on the road is they’re unable to generate any form of momentum for a sustained period, and with limited travelling support, especially in this long journey to the West, they’re drowned out of the contest quite quickly.

The main trend in most of their road losses is the inability to put some scoreboard pressure on early, and they’re typically playing catch-up in most of their games.

The Dockers will try and suffocate the Suns with their quick ball movement out of defensive 50, spreading them wide and opening up gaps, and if they’re able to dominate in the centre, they’ll most likely post a winnable score by three-quarter time.

Gold Coast have failed the challenge time and time again, and whilst they’re arguably the better team on paper, it’s a cultural issue.
