Horse Racing News: Joseph Azzopardi makes the most of strong book

Jockey Joseph Azzopardi capped off a stellar weekend in the saddle, booting home five winners at Geraldton yesterday.

Joseph Azzopardi teamed up with trainer Michael Grantham to score wins abord Just Gifted, New Music, King Akeed and First Beach.

He also scored aboard the Adam Durrant-trained Snippy Which.

Azzopardi said he was pleased to capitalise on the strong book.

“I thought if things went right, I could ride four of five,” Azzopardi told TABradio.

“When they look good on paper sometimes you don’t ride a winner at all.

“Things worked out well.”

Azzopardi’s five winners came off the back of saluting aboard Cosmic Crusader in Saturday’s 2024 Pinnacles Carnival – Noms Close 14th October Handicap (1200m).

It was the first time Azzopardi rode the four-year-old since he finished sixth behind Zipaway in last year’s Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m).

Azzopardi said there was plenty to like about the son of Maurice’s win and could figure through the carnival.

“1200 isn’t his peak distance,” he said.

“He did a good job to win.

“He’s nominated for the Railway and the Gold Rush.

“It’d be nice to see him win one of the lead ups to that.

“If he does things right, I think he can.”

Azzopardi also indicated Listed winner Amber Glide was on track after finishing third to Almighty Class in the Schweppes Handicap (1000m).
