Cummins joins Aus A, won’t play on UK tour

Pat Cummins will join the likes of Brad Haddin and James Pattinson on Australia A’s three-match tour of the UK, but won’t feature in the Ashes tune-up.

Cummins, 20, is yet to play for Australia since excelling on Test debut, against South Africa in November 2011.

The injury-plagued paceman has been sidelined since the Sydney Sixers’ Champions League campaign in October 2012, but is slated to return in July.

To help achieve that goal, Cummins will join physiotherapist David Beakley and Centre of Excellence mentor Troy Cooley in the UK.

Australia A’s campaign starts with a four-day match against Scotland on June 7, with Cummins not expected to take the field.

However Cricket Australia general manager Pat Howard noted there was a chance he could play in intra-squad and warm-up games alongside Haddin and six other members of the Ashes squad.

“Pat Cummins is not being added to the Australia A squad but rather continuing work on the areas identified in his customised program,” Howard said.

“Depending on his continued progression, he may play in intra-squad and warm up matches if this is deemed appropriate based on his workloads but there is no intention for Pat to play in any of the tour games.

“The aim is to have Pat available and prepared for Australia A series in South Africa in July/August.”

The Australia A squad departs for the UK on May 25.
