Bellamy expects Gower in Knights NRL side

Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy is expecting veteran Craig Gower to be rushed into the Newcastle side for their NRL clash on Sunday.

Gower, 35, hasn’t played in the NRL since 2007 and only started training with the Knights this week after signing from the UK.

But with Newcastle desperate to end a three-game losing streak and facing a Storm outfit that’s flying, Bellamy believes Gower will get some game time at AAMI Park despite not being included in their initial 18-man squad.

“I’ve had a bit to do with Craig Gower and the one thing that’s really stood out is he’s a wonderful competitor,” Bellamy said.

“He loves competing and loves working hard for his teammates.

“He looks excited about being back and playing with Newcastle and I’m sure he’ll give the team a really competitive attitude just with his attitude.”

Bellamy didn’t think the former Penrith captain and Test star would be off the pace in his return to the NRL because of his recent experience in the Super League with the London Broncos.

Before that, he played rugby union, earning 14 Test caps with Italy.

“He’s not completely foreign to the game for six years.

“I know he’s 35 and most guys are finished by then but he is a really competitive guy and I’m sure he’ll give the Knights a lift.”

Newcastle will finalise their squad to travel to Melbourne after their Saturday morning training session.
