Preview:
It’s Round 12 of the AFL this weekend, with six matches taking place due to byes. The first match is between Carlton and Hawthorn, kicking off at Etihad Stadium at 7.50pm. Hawthorn will go into this game as favourites, with the Blues struggling last week against Essendon and the Hawks fresh off a bye last round. The Blues will be giving this one everything they’ve got, however, sitting at 6-5 at what is the official half-way point of the season. It’s almost impossible to go past the current form of the Hawks though, who also have the advantage of dominating Carlton head to head in recent seasons.

Yarran’s position at risk for AFL Blues

Carlton AFL speedster Chris Yarran faces a possible axing after his display of poor body language as the substitute player in the Blues’ loss to Essendon.

Yarran was unimpressed with his role in the green vest and had little impact when coach Mick Malthouse pulled the trigger to inject him into the game in the final quarter of last Friday’s clash at the MCG, where the Blues lost by five points.

Seventh-placed Carlton (6-5 win-loss) host premiership favourites Hawthorn (9-1) on Friday at Etihad Stadium and Malthouse says Yarran’s position is under review.

“He admits it wasn’t good and I don’t think it was good and how we handle that, that’s an internal voice and an action,” Malthouse told a media conference on Tuesday.

“There’s a chance of the side being changed considerably.

“We lost a game that we shouldn’t have.”

Malthouse said Yarran had apologised for his behaviour.

The veteran coach’s famous grumpy attitude towards the media bubbled to the surface amid a series a questions about Yarran.

“You know what? I want to finish this conversation about Chris Yarran,” Malthouse fumed.

“He clearly didn’t have the right body language.

“We all know that. There’s no use hiding that.

“He is the first to admit it. He has apologised for it.

“He is very remorseful about being in a position where he hasn’t taken on board the team theme and he fully acknowledges it.

“He will be far better for this. The club will be far better for this.

“It is a learning curve for all.”

While Malthouse was talking tough about selections, he also left the door open for Yarran to remain in the side because of his match-winning abilities.

“When people make mistakes do you punish them twice? No,” Malthouse said.

“So our side will be picked with the one thing in mind, to have the best side available out there to beat Hawthorn.”

Malthouse said tagger Andrew Carrazzo would be assessed by medical staff in his bid to return from a calf-muscle tear while ruckman Robbie Warnock (knee) had trained strongly on Tuesday.

Dual Brownlow Medallist Chris Judd will play his 250th game as the Blues aim to record their first win over Hawthorn since 2005.
