Scotland pick new caps for Sth Africa

Scotland included three new caps on Thursday in the team to face South Africa on June 15 in a four-nation tournament.

The debutants for the game at Mbombela Stadium in new Test venue Nelspruit are fullback Peter Murchie, right-wing Tommy Seymour and lock Tim Swinson.

Coach Scott Johnson has made seven changes to the side beaten 27-17 by Samoa last weekend in a bruising first-round clash.

Fly-half Ruaridh Jackson, hooker Scott Lawson, lock Jim Hamilton and flank Ryan Wilson are the others elevated to the starting line-up.

Tour-ending injuries ruled out captain and loose forward Kelly Brown and hooker Pat MacArthur and concussed fly-half Tom Heathcote is rested.

Lock Alastair Kellock drops to the bench while the axe fell on fullback Greig Tonks, left-wing Tim Visser and lock Grant Gilchrist.

Australian Johnson said the casualty list after the Samoa loss — which ran into double figures — was the longest he had known in his coaching career.

“I cannot remember so many injuries from one Test, but it is a fact and we just have to get on with it,” he said.

“We wanted to find out about players through this tour and, because of circumstances, that process is being accelerated.”
