Warriors’ Hurrell seeks defensive steel

Bullocking Warriors centre Konrad Hurrell’s try-scoring threat has always been evident.

But he also knows he has to tighten up his game when the opposition have the ball.

Hurrell will line up against the Sydney Roosters on Sunday in his third successive NRL match since being recalled after a spell with the Auckland Vulcans.

His past two starts have produced three tries, making it six in nine matches this season.

There was a brace in the 56-18 defeat of Brisbane and then what turned out to be the decisive try in the 18-16 win over Manly.

But after defensive lapses against the Sea Eagles, Hurrell was pulled from the field five minutes from time as the Warriors clung on to their lead.

The 21-year-old admits he was disappointed at coming off early, but understood coach Matthew Elliott’s decision.

“I wasn’t happy, but at the same time it was a good thing for the team, because I was lacking on defence,” he said.

“I need to work on that and hopefully it won’t happen again.”

Hurrell made a big impression in his debut season in 2012, finishing equal top in the club’s try-scoring stakes with 12, 11 of them in a seven-match run.

He admits his form has been up-and-down this year, with errors hindering his game.

Apart from his defence, he’s looking to improve his fitness and concentration.

“Sometimes I clock off and that’s when they get the opportunities to score tries, like last week,” he said.

“I was a bit slack, jogging back and not sprinting back. It’s the small the stuff, the one per cent, that I need to work on.”

There’s no denying Hurrell’s potency in attack, however, and he showed it again in powering past five Manly defenders to score the Warriors’ go-ahead try in the 68th minute.

“There’s always a good feeling in getting a try,” he said.

“But if it wasn’t for the hard work of the rest of the boys, I wouldn’t have been there 10 metres from the try line.”
