Bayrir entered for Winter Stakes 2013

International Group One winner Bayrir is among the entries for the Winter Stakes but a final decision has yet to be made whether he will make his Australian debut at Rosehill on Saturday.

Formerly prepared by Melbourne Cup winning trainer Alain du Royer-Dupre who sent him to the United States to claim the Secretariat Stakes at Arlington in August last year, Bayrir is now in the care of Chris Waller and the ownership of Linda and Graham Huddy.

The four-year-old is also a Group Two winner in his native France and came to Australia after finishing midfield in the Hong Kong Vase at the International meeting at Sha Tin in December.

He has been given a rating of 103 and 59kg with Mic Mac heading the 17 nominations for the Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) on 106, going up two points and 1-1/2 kilograms for his last start win in the Civic Stakes.

Waller’s definite runners will be Coup Ay Tee and Wazn who is returning from a year-long injury lay-off.

Wazn is also originally from France and has adapted well to Australia, claiming five of his six wins including the 2012 Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) since his arrival.

“He’s coming back after a year off with a knee injury,” Waller said.

“He has had a barrier trial and has done well since and I’m looking forward to his return.

“Coup Ay Tee will also run and hopefully can bounce back.”

The five-year-old was well beaten as favourite on July 1 but no post-race problems were found with the heavy track a possible explanation.

Before that race he finished second to Winter Stakes rival Under The Sun on June 8 after beating the Gai Waterhouse-trained runner two weeks earlier.

Waterhouse has also entered Kinnersley and Kontiki Park.

Kinnersley was another who didn’t appreciate the wet track at Rosehill on July 1, finishing last of the 13 runners in the same race Coup Ay Tee failed in but Kontiki Park put in a good effort to run fourth.
