Ricki Herbert will coach the All Whites through to the end of New Zealand’s 2014 World Cup campaign, New Zealand Football (NZF) confirmed on Tuesday.
It is Herbert’s second extension since the 2010 World Cup, when New Zealand went through pool play undefeated, with draws against Slovakia, Italy and Paraguay.
Coach of the All Whites since 2005, he will become New Zealand soccer’s longest serving coach with the extension.
Herbert said he was looking forward to the challenges ahead in qualifying for the Confederations Cup and World Cup, both in Brazil.
“We have a job to do. The focus is reaching Brazil twice, and to do that we have to keep winning games on the longest qualification path we’ve had since 1982.”
New Zealand began from a better base than they did in 2005, Herbert said, and their friendly international against Jamaica in Auckland on February 29 will provide an early indication of form.
The Oceania stage of World Cup qualifying, originally scheduled to end in mid 2012, has been extended and will now finish in March 2013.
“We believe Ricki is the man to see us through the qualifiers and, if things go to plan, on to another Confederations Cup and World Cup,” NZF chief executive Grant McKavanagh said.
If New Zealand prevail through the two stages of Oceania qualifiers, their path to the 2014 World Cup will culminate in a home and away playoff against a Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) nation in November 2013.
NZF has continued the arrangement with Wellington Phoenix which ensures Herbert will be free from A-League commitments while fulfilling All White duties.
