Dockers re-sign AFL defender Silvagni

Fringe Fremantle defender Alex Silvagni has re-signed for a further AFL season, while young talls Tanner Smith and Matt Taberner have also penned new deals.

Silvagni has played 39 games since being selected in the 2009 rookie draft.

The 25-year-old has played predominantly in defence over the past four seasons, but he was trialled up forward earlier this year when skipper Matthew Pavlich succumbed to injury.

The move failed to pay dividends, and Silvagni has had to rely on injuries to get a gig in defence.

Silvagni was originally selected for last week’s qualifying final win over Geelong, but was withdrawn from the side when Luke McPharlin passed a late fitness test.

Smith, who was selected with pick 36 in the 2012 national draft, has signed a one-year extension, tying him to the club until the end of 2015.

Former rookie Taberner is also locked in until the end of 2015 after penning a two-year deal, with the 20-year-old also upgraded to the senior list.

Fremantle are in the box seat to reach this year’s grand final after their shock win over Geelong.

The Dockers have the week off before hosting either Sydney or Carlton in a home preliminary final.

Fremantle were given a double dose of good news on Monday when defender Zac Dawson was cleared of any wrongdoing by the match review panel over three separate incidents, and forward Chris Mayne was offered a reprimand for his strike to the chest of Steve Johnson.
