LPGA picks Iowa to host ’17 Solheim Cup

The 15th Solheim Cup between US and European women’s golf teams will be staged in 2017 at Des Moines Golf and Country Club, LPGA commissioner Michael Whan announced Monday.

The course also hosted the 1999 US Senior Open, luring a record 252,800 spectators to the US Midwest venue, located about 540km west of Chicago.

“The support that the Des Moines community has shown for golf events has been tremendous,” Whan said. “I have no doubt that the 2017 Solheim Cup is already on track to be the best event we’ve ever staged.”

The European squad routed the Americans 18-10 in August at Denver for their first win on US soil and the first back-to-back triumphs by Europe in the biennial showdown after their 2011 victory in Ireland.

The US women lead the all-time rivalry 8-5 with the 2015 edition of the Solheim Cup set for Germany.
