Former women’s tennis world No.1 Ana Ivanovic will play at the Auckland Classic tennis tournament over the New Year.
Ivanovic, who won the French Open in 2008 and spent 12 weeks at number one that year, was confirmed on Tuesday as a starter for Auckland’s WTA tour event, which starts on December 30.
The glamorous Serbian won the French Open at the age of 20 but hasn’t quite gone on with it since then, generally finishing the year ranked between 10 and 25.
She is currently ranked 14 in the world, with her best performance this year being semi-final appearances in Madrid and Carlsbad.
In the grand slam events she reached the last 16 at the US Open, French Open and Australian Open but was a second round victim at Wimbledon.
Also confirmed for the Classic is 19-year-old Laura Robson of Britain. Ranked 41 in the world, her most notable performance of the year was reaching the last 16 at Wimbledon after beating New Zealand’s Marina Erakovic in the third round.
