Controversial Wallaby star James O’Connor has reportedly taken an early release from his contract with the Australian Rugby Union.
The move follows an investigation into O’Connor’s behaviour after he was escorted from Perth airport by Federal police over a dispute with airline staff three weeks ago.
News Corp reports the ARU and O’Connor have agreed to his release from his contract which was until the end of 2014.
It means he can receive no ARU top up payments until at least 2015, making it likely he will head overseas.
The airport incident was the latest of several behavioural issues which had put O’Connor offside with the Wallabies camp and he was previously cut loose by the Melbourne Rebels who decided against offering him a new Super Rugby contract.
“The Australian Rugby Union and I have mutually agreed to put the past behind us and move forward from today,” O’Connor was quoted as saying on Thursday.
“As a professional, I am focused on developing as a person and as an athlete and intend to do everything possible to put myself in the best environment to do that.
“I want to apologise for any issues that I have caused and I want express my respect for my teammates, the Wallabies and the jumper.
“There is nothing more important and rewarding to me than representing my country.”
O’Connor said he appreciated the impact that some of his action had on the team and rugby in general and recognised that it was best for both the Wallabies and himself to go “in different directions” in the short term.
“I remain focused on earning my place back with the Wallabies and will be looking for the right opportunity to do this,” he said.
The 23-year-old said he plans to stay on the Gold Coast with his family over the coming weeks, while he decides on his playing future.
That will include continuing discussions with Western Force, the one Australian Super Rugby franchise which has been interested in signing him.
“I realise I need to earn back a lot of respect, and that is exactly what I plan to do both on and off the field,” he said.
“I want to wish my teammates and the Wallabies the best of success and I will be supporting you fully in the coming months.”
