Australia’s two representatives in the Champions League Twenty20 have finished last in their respective pools as three Indian teams qualified for the semi-finals on Wednesday.
The Perth Scorchers’ dismal campaign ended with a crushing six-wicket loss to the Mumbai Indians in Delhi, leaving them and Brisbane Heat with no wins from eight pool games.
Although the Scorchers and Heat each had one match ruined by rain, they failed to get up in any of their other three fixtures in the lucrative 10-team event.
It was a vastly different story to last year in South Africa, where the Sydney Sixers went undefeated to take out the 2012 title.
The Scorchers also did one better in 2012, winning one game to finish second last in their group.
But coach Justin Langer remained philosophical about his side’s poor campaign in India, saying a lot had been gained by the experience.
“I kept telling them to keep pinching each other and keep smiling because this will be one of the biggest days of your lives – playing against the Mumbai Indians in front of a crowd like this,” Langer said post-match.
“When we get back to play club cricket on the weekend in front of no people, they’ll remember they were living today.”
Perth’s thrashing did no favours for New Zealand side Otago, who were knocked out thanks to Mumbai’s speedy demolition of the Australians.
Needing to reach a target of 150 inside 14.2 overs to surpass Otago on net run rate in pool A, Mumbai blasted the Australians from the outset in scoring 4-152 off 13.2 overs.
The Rajasthan Royals, who finished atop the Scorchers’ group, face 2010 champions Chennai Super Kings for the first semi-final in Jaipur on Friday.
Trinidad and Tobago will then play 2011 champions Mumbai in Delhi a day later.
