Jamieson misses record 59 at Portugal golf

Scott Jamieson equalled a European Tour golf record by shooting a 60, putting him in a four-way tie for second at two strokes behind leader Paul Waring after three rounds of the Portugal Masters on Saturday.

The 18th player to shoot 60 on the tour, Jamieson had to settle for par on the final hole when his 15-foot birdie chip grazed the edge of the hole and stayed out.

After opening with rounds of 66 and 73 to make the cut by a stroke, the 29-year-old Scot had 11 birdies in the bogey-free round.

Jamieson said after sinking a birdie on the 13th hole, he told his caddie “a few more and we could be part of history.

“I was definitely nervous but, thinking about it from the tournament point of view, the leaders are going to be a minimum of 16, 17 maybe 18-under going into tomorrow so that kept me going from a pushing point of view,” Jamieson said.

Waring came in with a share of the overnight lead and birdied the 16th and 17th holes on the Oceanico Victoria course to take sole possession of it at 16-under-par.

Jamieson was 14-under along with Ireland’s Simon Thornton (65), Welshman Jamie Donaldson (66) and South Africa’s Hennie Otto (69).

Scotland’s Chris Doak (69) and Spaniards Pablo Larrazabal (64) and Alvaro Quiros (68) are another shot behind heading into Sunday’s final round.

Jamieson had shot a round of 57 before winning his first title at the Nelson Mandela Championship in South Africa last December, but that was in a tournament cut to 36 holes on a course reduced to a par 65 because of wet fairways.

“I said to Richard (his caddie) playing 17, I really want to make a birdie here so we have a chance of it going down the last and I could not have asked to hit a better shot in,” he said.

“It pitched just short of the hole.”

It was the 18th round of 60 in European Tour history and the second this season after Peter Uihlein’s 12-under round during the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
