V8 Supercars veteran Greg Murphy says he’s chasing personal redemption on the Gold Coast following his Bathurst shocker.
The New Zealand great crashed out of the Bathurst 1000 two weeks ago, effectively ending co-driver James Courtney’s hopes of securing this year’s championship.
Courtney was full of praise for Murphy’s return behind the wheel at the Gold Coast 600 on Friday, saying the four-time Bathurst champ had played a key role in setting up their Holden Racing Team Commodore to finish second on the practice timesheets behind series leader Jamie Whincup.
Murphy however admits his pride was stung by the Bathurst blunder and he won’t be happy until he can bounce back in this weekend’s two 300km street circuit races.
“For James. His championship. All that sort of stuff, it was pretty bad,” Murphy said.
“We always want to do our best wherever we go … so far the weekend has been quite smooth, a lot smoother than what we had at Bathurst and I love to be able to stand on a podium over the weekend.”
Murphy and the rest of the V8s field will begin their quest for glory on the streets of Surfers on Saturday morning with qualifying set to begin at 10.30am AEST (1130AEDT).
That will set the starting grid for the first of two 300km races this weekend, with Saturday’s event to start at 2.30pm AEST (1530AEDT).
