The Sydney Cricket Ground’s much vaunted $186 million renovation of the Bradman and Noble stands will not be completed in time for the New Year’s Ashes Test according to the SCG and Sports GroundTrust.
In its latest update on the state of the renovations at the famous ground, the SCG and Sports Ground Trust said fans and members can expect some temporary facilities there for the fifth Ashes Test beginning on January 3.
“While practical completion for the new stands is expected early in 2014, we are working towards opening the majority of facilities for day one of the Test Match,” the update read.
An SCG official told AAP, the stand, which looked well short of completion at a promotional event at the ground for the Major League Baseball series there in March, would be ready for the Test “but without all the bells and whistles”.
All the seating is expected to be in place for the Test, alongside the new roof but Trust spokesman Greg Campbell told Fairfax media the new pavilion was never expected to be “100 per cent completed” for the fifth Test.
“It was always going to be operational for the Test match this year. That’s the goal and that will be met,” he said.
“Finished and operational are two different things.”
The highly anticipated state of the art facilities are expected to be finished in time for the MLB series between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the LA Dodgers on March 22 and 23 and for the Sydney Swans’ opening SCG home game of the 2014 AFL season against North Melbourne on April 13.
