Wistful impresses on Melbourne Cup 2013 day

Darley mare Wistful will go in search of black type after a dominant win at Flemington on Tuesday.

The four-year-old proved to her trainer Peter Snowden that she is capable of competing in better company after taking out the TAB Rewards Trophy.

Snowden said he regretted not entering Wistful for the Matriarch Stakes on the final day of the Melbourne Cup carnival.

Instead he will set the in-form mare for the Group Three Summoned Stakes at Sandown a week later.

The $4.80 favourite, Wistful led early but took a trail when Sinhala assumed the running.

Minnie Downs ($12) threw out a challenge in the straight but under Kerrin McEvoy, Wistful held a 1-3/4 length advantage with Rememba Howe ($41) a head away third.

“She’s in great form,” said Snowden.

“She keeps on improving and each run is better than her last.”

He believes the mare can handle longer trips and will look for a 2000m race further into the spring.

McEvoy said he put Wistful on the speed to take “bad luck out of the equation”.
