State league stars, delisted AFL players and overlooked juniors head to the last chance saloon on Wednesday.
Their last hopes of finding a spot on an AFL list next season come with the pre-season and rookie drafts, where clubs will finalise their playing stocks for 2014.
Just five sides – Greater Western Sydney, Collingwood, Richmond, Carlton and Sydney – have picks at their disposal for the pre-season draft, with Jed Lamb going to the Giants at pick one the only certainty.
Lamb was a first-round draft pick for Sydney but crosses the city after finding no room in the Swans’ forward line or salary cap with the arrival of Lance Franklin from Hawthorn.
That could be the only pick utilised in the pre-season draft, after the Giants’ interest in delisted veteran goalsneak Alan Didak ended this week.
With just 59 picks used by clubs at the national draft last week, more well-regarded juniors have missed out than in other years and will hope to be read out in the rookie draft.
Clubs must have at least four rookies on their lists.
The most likely rookie pick-ups include Tasmanian on-baller Eli Templeton, South Australians Darcy Hourigan and James Battersby and West Australian ruckman Darcy Cameron.
Fellow Tasmanian and former Hawthorn forward Mitch Thorp has dominated the island’s state league with premiers South Launceston and could also be picked up.
In defence, Joel Tippett could find his way onto a third AFL list after stints with the Queensland clubs.
The younger brother of Sydney star Kurt, 25-year old Tippett could be thrown straight into an AFL defence in need of support.
St Kilda have been speculated as a home for the younger Tippett, along with delisted Suns midfielder Maverick Weller and former Pies ruckman Darren Jolly.
Essendon have revealed they are interested in adding another tall through the rookie draft, likely to be 206cm 24-year old Michael Sikora who has been training with the Bombers.
